The Blues look likely to be without centre Isaia Toeava for several weeks and the All Blacks back is seeing a specialist to clear up a leg problem.
Toeava left the field during the the Blues victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin and says it appears to be an upper leg injury.
There is however some good news for the Blues as Anthony Tuitavake has recovered from a pelvic injury suffered during the Air New Zealand Cup and may be rushed back into the team.
Blues coach Pat Lam will however be cautious with utility back Tuitavake who came through a 60 minute trial with the development side over the weekend.
"It's just making sure that he's 100 (percent) as well," said Lam.
"There's still a little bit of niggle there, and we'll make that decision as we go through the week."
"We've just got to balance it out - we found last year even though All Blacks came back, some weren't ready to play yet." he told Stuff.
"It takes a bit of time, and it's about making sure we get the best possible team we can out there."
The Blues play the Reds this weekend at Queensland’s spiritual home of rugby at Ballymore, "They were very good," noted Lam.
"They were good against the Waratahs and should have won that game. They're certainly a different team under Ewen McKenzie, and with the heat and humidity there, it won't be easy at all."
"And we're an hour earlier than last week (6.40pm local time). It looked hot last week and it's certainly going to be a challenge this week."
In particular Lam has noted a big improvement in the Reds defence.
"Their defence was an issue for them last year, but it looks like they've tidied that up," added Lam.
The Reds have however not won back to back matches since 2006 but returning to one of the oldest rugby grounds in Australia was welcomed by new coach Ewen McKenzie.
"Now we'll try to win two games in a row. The ethos we're building is to knuckle down, because we want to reinforce we're on the right track," McKenzie said to the Courier Mail.
"We only earned the (four tries) by getting stuck in physically, and part of that was the three tries off errors that we forced by our defence. "
"Ballymore is a great cauldron. We train there every day, so the boys will feel very comfortable there."
